Brian Bonsall Violates Probation

Brian Bonsall, the former child actor who portrayed Andy Keaton in “Family Ties,” will appear in court on Wednesday, July 16, on charges of violating his probation.Brian Bonsall was charged and sentenced last year for assaulting his girlfriend. At his trial in 2007, he pleaded guilty for the third-degree assault of his girlfriend. His girlfriend claimed that Bonsall poured an alcoholic drink on her face as she slept. When she tried to leave, he put her in a choke hold and then threw her on the bed. Bonsall argued self-defense but was unsuccessful. Bonsall was sentenced to two years of probation. He told the court at that time that he was in rehab and had been clean for five months.
Now he is due to appear in court tomorrow for violating the conditions of his probation by failing to pay for domestic-violence classes, missing daily breathalyzer tests and submitting a positive breath test. One probation officer has recommended that Bonsall be sentenced to a 60-day term of work release. That would allow him to leave the jail for work each day but then he’d have to return at night. The officer also suggests that Bonsall pay for his domestic violence classes and follow a “strict sobriety schedule” which includes attending four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings each week.
