Her curves have been the subject of much debate in recent months but Gemma Arterton was more than happy to show them off as she stripped down to a bikini while relaxing by a hotel pool yesterday.The 23-year-old actress looked like she didn’t have a care in the world as she chilled out on a sun lounger while enjoying a day off from shooting Greek epic Clash of the Titans in the Canary Islands.

Dressed in a black two-piece swimsuit with her hair scraped into a messy bun, the smiling actress appeared to be making the most of her brief time off and went for a dip in the pool before lighting a cigarette and pulling out a book.Earlier this year, Gemma revealed her pride in her size ten hourglass shape, following pictures of her sporting signs of a double chin.

It was a far cry from the toned figure she showed in the Bond film Quantum Of Solace, in which she appeared naked with Daniel Craig. But Gemma insisted she was happy with her image and said she would not be slimming for future roles.She added: 'I refuse to conform to this muscly, sinewy look that so many actresses seem to think is attractive. I hate it and I don't think it's very feminine.'I dress like a woman and wear a lot of couture because it's made for real women with curves. I'm a size ten, which I don't think is big.'

Gemma Arterton Recreates Liz Taylor's Iconic Bedroom Scene

Gemma Arterton followed in the footsteps of a long list of Bond girls when she was plucked to star in Quantum Of Solace.Her name was suddenly being mentioned in the same breath as silver screen legends Ursula Andress, Jane Seymour, Halle Berry and Diana Rigg.But now she has set her sights even higher... by emulating Elizabeth Taylor in one of her most memorable scenes.

The 23-year-old actress has recreated a moment from Dame Liz's 1958 classic Cat On A Hot Tin Roof to promote the upcoming Virgin Media Shorts competition.Dressed in white negligee and a curly black wig, Gemma reclined on a gold brass bed to recreate an early scene in the movie, in which Elizabeth's character Maggie 'The Cat' attempts to entice her hard-drinking husband Brick (Paul Newman) to bed.

The film, adapted from a Tennessee Williams play, starred Taylor and Newman as a couple experiencing the breakdown of their marriage after the suicide of Brick's best friend Skipper.While Maggie is desperately trying to resurrect their sex life, Brick is more interested in drinking to get over his hatred of the 'mendacity' of the world.The film was nominated for six Oscars, but failed to win any.

'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' Premieres Tonight

Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A "Masterpiece" presentation. Starring Gemma Arterton and Eddie Redmayne. Directed by David Blair.Of all the great British Victorian novelists, Thomas Hardy may be the most daunting candidate for a film or television adaptation for the not very simple reason that, when reduced to plot alone, his novels can seem almost shallow and melodramatic.

In fact, they are anything but. His characterizations are superb, his portrayal of life in England's West Country extravagantly detailed and, above all, his daring examination of the moral and theological conflicts inherent in any society, but in particular, in Victorian England, made him the perfect author to push the British Isles toward a new century. "Jude the Obscure," his last great novel before he spent the final three decades of his life writing poetry, is a masterpiece, and two other late novels, "The Mayor of Casterbridge" and "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," aren't far behind.

What makes them great is Hardy's use of fatalism as a determining factor in his characters' lives - in a nutshell, people can't help themselves. All well and good, but how can a screenwriter translate that concept to a script without having to fall back on a wordy voiceover to keep the characters from seeming like a bunch of Victorian lemmings?

That's the problem David Nicholls faced in the latest adaptation of "Tess" for PBS' "Masterpiece" series. Eventually, some very good performances rescue the effort, but the first half of the film, airing Sunday night, focuses so heavily on plot, young Tess Durbeyfield comes off as a dishrag whose consistent failure to stand up for herself will make you think you're watching "Foolish Women, Foolish Choices," Victorian-style.
