Dobson In Radio Hall Of Fame
Dr. James Dobson, the Focus on the Family broadcaster, has been inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. It is the first religious program to receive this honor. The show has been on the radio for over 30 years. The reason this qualifies as celebrity news is the list of names who DIDN’T win because Dobson took home the prize. The religious broadcaster was nominated in “national active” category, with Bob Costas, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, and Howard Stern, none of whom made it into the Hall of Fame. This category is for “an active broadcaster who has made at least 10 years of significant contributions to the industry on a national level.”
The win by Dobson was fairly controversial, at least as far as these Hall of Fame votes go. His show is not universally supported, and some radio fans went so far as to create websites geared at keeping Dobson out of the Radio Hall of Fame and off the ballot (commentator Wayne Besen and TruthWinsOut.org, to name a couple).
But if people are upset about the vote, they only have themselves to blame if they didn’t cast a ballot. For the first time ever, Radio Hall of Fame voting was free and open to the general public, having previously been open to members only, which cost $15. Winners will be inducted at the Renaissance Chicago Hotel on November 8.
