Tom Cruise in “Top Gun II”
It looks like Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as Maverick in “Top Gun II.” See photos and video here. Twenty-two years have passed since “Top Gun” blew out box offices worldwide. Will it be worth the wait?Tom Cruise will take to the skies again in a sequel to “Top Gun.” Cruise, 46, is in talks with studio bigwigs to play Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell again in “Top Gun II.” This time around Maverick will be a Top Gun insructor who must deal with a cocky new female pilot. With Maverick’s original cocky character and now a new cocky character there will be plenty of cockiness to go around in the cockpit.
If the various parties come to an agreement for the sequel, “Top Gun II” will be a surefire hit despite Cruise’s less-than-stellar box office earnings of late. “Mission: Impossible III” (2006) and “Lions for Lambs” (2007) were disappointments all around. “Top Gun II” may be just what the doctor ordered for Cruise’s stagnating career.
If “Top Gun II” can come through with a sound track as great as the original with hits such as “Take My Breath Away,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” and “Danger Zone,” and if the writers can come up with a plot with just the right mix of danger and romance, then it would definitely be worth the wait.
