Grammy Awards 2009 Winners
The 51st Annual Grammy Awards take place on February 8, 2009 in a live telecast on CBS at 8pm ET/PT. See a complete list of nominees, winners, photos, video here.The ceremony is held at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California. The nominees are of recordings released during the eligibility year which is October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008. The first annual Grammy Awards took place in 1959 with a mere 22 awards categories, with the Best Rock And Roll Recording category not added until 1962. This year, in contrast, there are 110 categories with a staggering 1,117 nominees.
New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne leads with eight Grammy Awards nominations. Coldplay is second with seven Grammy nods, and Jay-Z, Ne-Yo and Kanye West each received six nods. Newcomer R&B singer-songwriter Jazmine Sullivan has received five Grammy nods. Former American Idol and Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Hudson received four nods. Leona Lewis, X-Factor winner and now international music star received three nods as did Rihanna.Awards presenters include John Legend, Leona Lewis, Dwayne Johnson, LL Cool J, Diddy, Will.I.Am, and former members of Blink-182; Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker.
Among the performers at this year’s awards, notably Grammy Award nominee Jennifer Hudson in her second performance after the October 2008 tragedy, the shooting deaths of her mother, brother and nephew; she sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009 to much acclaim. Prior to the broadcast, the program’s producer, Ken Ehrlic, revealed that she had chosen to perform “You Pulled Me Through”, a ballad from her 2008 self-titled debut album, written by written by Diane Warren. Buddy Guy, B.B. King, John Mayer and Keith Urban pay tribute to rock and roll pioneer and legend Bo Diddley, who died in 2008.
Also performing are are U2, Paul McCartney, Lil Wayne, T.I., Kanye West, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Kid Rock, Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift. Stevie Wonder, Smoky Robinson, Robin Thicke, Allen Toussaint, Terence Blanchard and Niel Diamond. Although nine months pregnant, M.I.A. is also scheduled to perform.
