New York Jets Drag Queen Cheerleaders

The New York Jets will soon be holding open auditions for their cheerleading squad “Flight Crew.” Nearly 60 hopefuls will audition a spot on the team, but everyone has a fair shot, including drag queens.WNYC’s Kathleen Horan stopped by a dance class full of hopefuls in NYC, and she asked some tough questions. Noticing that men weren’t on the team she questioned Denise Garvey, the director and dance choreographer for the NY Jets.

REPORTER: There’s not the kind of human variety you might find in a supermarket checkout line - the largest body is about a size “6″ -and there are no male cheerleader wannabe’s.GARVEY: we haven’t had any men apply… we are looking for young women.REPORTER: If there was a mind blowing drag queen?”GARVEY: I guess everyone deserves a fair chance - so that would be my attitude.For many people, becoming a professional cheerleader is their dream, so it is nice to hear that auditions are open for anyone. The first round of auditions will be held on May 17th.
